Unity’s beginnings are deeply personal.
Myrtle Fillmore, who had been ill most of her life and diagnosed with inherited tuberculosis, was told there was no cure. After hearing an affirmation, “I am a child of God; therefore, I do not inherit sickness,” she devoted herself to prayer and meditation. Over time, her health returned. She went on to live another 45 vibrant years, inspiring the foundation of Unity’s teachings on healing and faith.
Charles Fillmore brought a lifelong passion for learning to the movement. A devoted student of literature, world religions, philosophy, and science, he explored the relationship between mind, body, and spirit. Today, modern science continues to explore the same connections Unity recognized more than a century ago.
A Growing Movement
Unity officially began in 1889 with the publication of Modern Thought magazine, now known as Unity Magazine. This was followed by Wee Wisdom, a children’s magazine, and Lessons in Truth by H. Emilie Cady, Unity’s first book and still one of its most widely used study guides today.
Through these teachings, the Fillmores also created Silent Unity, a worldwide prayer ministry that has been receiving prayer requests 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for more than 100 years. Every request is held in continuous prayer for 30 days.

Village
Unity Village is a village in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 99 at the 2010 census. The village is the world headquarters of the Unity movement, which has over 2 million followers. Unity is an open-minded, accepting spiritual community that honors all paths to God and helps people discover and live their spiritual potential and purpose.
Unity Today
The first Unity church was established in 1903, followed by the Unity School of Christianity. In 1924, Daily Word was first published and has been offering daily messages of hope, encouragement, and spiritual insight ever since. Today, Unity continues to welcome people of all backgrounds and beliefs, offering practical spirituality for everyday life.
